I always taught that the future King Edward VII born in 1842 was the last child born to a reigning sovereign untill Prince Andrew?. Hardly, I'm afraid. The future King Edward VII was Queen Victoria's second child after her namesake who became Princess Royal and later the Empress Frederick of Germany. Queen Victoria then gave birth to Alice, Alfred, Helena, Louise, Arthur, Leopold and, finally, Beatrice.

Of course she was African. Egypt is an african country Geographically, Duke Rico, you are correct. However, Queen Cleoptra was a Member of the Ptolomaic Dynasty which had Greek origins. That's why this discovery is news.

OK, I agree that Prince Harry was maybe "ill-advised". We all know what happened.
However, what offends me more is the hypochracy of the press. If Prince Harry's remarks were so offensive why were they splashed on the front pages of every newspaper and reported on every news programme on radio and TV, every hour, on the hour, for days on end? And as for trying to make a story out of Prince Charles's nickname for a friend when that is everyone's nickname for him, words just fail me.

Why oh why does history keep repeating itself? Empress Elisabeth of Austria, Diana Princess of Wales and now Crown Princess Masako of Japan.

HRH The Princess Royal does indeed have the GCVO. She was awarded it early after the kidnap attempt on her in 1974 . She also took over as Grand Master of the Order recently following the death of HM The Queen Mother. [Princess Anne also has the higher Orders of the Garter and the Thistle now.]
OK, the others seem to have received their GCVOs after 16 or 17 years. But the Countess of Wessex has been doing quite high profile representative work for HM The Queen and "only" has the Order of St John with it's black sash. Not only would the Royal Victorian Order look more striking, it would refelct the level of Sophie's support for Her Majesty. Diana and Fergie weren't in the Royal family for so long, though I always thought that, as the wife of the Heir to the Throne, Diana should have been awarded the GCVO rather than just the Family Order.
Ho hum...

I wonder when the Countess of Wessex will receive the Royal Victorian Order, presumably a GCVO.

Having seen HRH The Prince of Wales take the salute at the Thanksgiving Service and March Past marking the end of the troubles in Northern Ireland I was struck by the fact that he was wearing the sash and star to the Order of the Garter. Wouldn't it have been an ideal moment to revive the Order of St Patrick?
Just an idea...

I was looking through the links on the Royal News site and was intrigued by photos of the Belgian National Day.
My question is: Who is the man in uniform who often appears on the second row? And why is his sash a darker purple to those worn by the Royal Family?

Dan, I was going to say that those not taking part in the Ceremony itself tend not to wear uniform. But then Princes William and Harry didn't ride in the Ceremony [as they aren't Colonels in Chief] but they were in unifrom. Prince William even sported the insignia of the Order of the Garter for the first time.
Maybe it is because Timothy Lawrence is a Navy man and Troopping the Colour is largely an Army event. If memory serves me right, he does wear uniform on Rememberance Sunday at the Cenotaph, though.

DP Tick, to let your hair down means to really enjoy yourself in a natural way without being self-concious and having to think about protocal.
I meant by "Is pink the new orange?" that the colour of the Dutch Royal family is orange [It's name is the House of Orange] but most of the Royal ladies that day were wearing pink...

Technically that's true Observer. Just as much as HM King Edward VIII could not abdicate himself. The British monarch rules by the authority of Parliament not Divine Right. Any such actions have to be carried out by the will and therefore Act of Parliament. King Edward issued his request to Abdicate, witnessed by his brothers, and the Prime Minister drew up the Act to put before Parliament the next day.

Many thanks, Observer. I'm glad your Danish is up to the mark ;o)
It makes me wonder if this was done entirely to be timed for Joachim and Marie's wedding and whether Marie is more favoured than HRH Prince Joachim's first wife, Alexandra.

And I hate to say it, because it makes me sound so old, but this royal live in girlfriend thing is, well, declasse. Mmmm, I know you hated to say it, but how "déclassée" do you believe, for instance, the Crown Princesses of Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands to be? At least the Crown Princess of Belgium is the daughter of a Count I suppose. One of the UK Sunday papers today says the The Queen wants Catherine Middleton to get a job. Mmm, that would be brilliant, except for the fact that no one would want to employ her if she is going to get married to HRH Prince William soon and hand her notice in after only a short while. If it is OK for The Queen to accpet her as Prince William's representative at his cousin's wedding the other day and she attended his Passing Out Parade and the ceremony where he was awarded his wings, I am sure that Her Majesty doesn't have any problem with her Catherine Middleton becoming Prince William's bride.

Thank you, Your Majesty. Strange that the official site for the Danish Monarchy doesn't mention it as part of his title...
