Royalty often has to do what they may not want to do but are required by the government to do it anyway. There was a big brouhaha when the Soviet Union sent its first ambassador to Britain after Britain recognized the Soviet Union in 1924. King George V kept putting off the formal reception of the new Soviet ambassador until it became an embarrasment to the Labour government. Finally, it was arranged for Edward, Prince of Wales to receive the ambassador and accept his credentials while acting in a regency capacity for his father. The prince shook hands with the Soviet and all was well. And the Queen has received some very savory heads of state in her time and awarded them a British knighthood. In the case of Prince William, I doubt he had much say in the matter either as a royal prince or as a serving officer. As both he is not at complete liberty to decide who he should meet and who he shouldn't, no matter how it looks to Members of Parliament.

And I hate to say it, because it makes me sound so old, but this royal live in girlfriend thing is, well, declasse. Mmmm, I know you hated to say it, but how "déclassée" do you believe, for instance, the Crown Princesses of Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands to be? At least the Crown Princess of Belgium is the daughter of a Count I suppose. One of the UK Sunday papers today says the The Queen wants Catherine Middleton to get a job. Mmm, that would be brilliant, except for the fact that no one would want to employ her if she is going to get married to HRH Prince William soon and hand her notice in after only a short while. If it is OK for The Queen to accpet her as Prince William's representative at his cousin's wedding the other day and she attended his Passing Out Parade and the ceremony where he was awarded his wings, I am sure that Her Majesty doesn't have any problem with her Catherine Middleton becoming Prince William's bride.

In fact, I think Catherine Middleton would, as I said, make a lovely addition to the British Royal Family. The Crown Princesses of Norway, Denmark, and the Netherlands are tremendous assets to their respective countries, and I have great admiration for them. However, I believe (and this is probably because of my upbringing) that for Miss Middleton to "live with" Prince William, without the benefit of marriage, pulls the image, the mystique if you will, of the monarchy down to the level of a rock star type of lifestyle. Most people probably do not feel this way; it's just this little old lady's opinion.

She has had some jobs since graduating university but there's talk that she helps out with the family business. Yeah I can't see Kate as a waitress, retail store clerk (though she was a fashion merchandiser for one), or some other average joe job, even if she didn't marry William I could see her becoming a world celebrity and getting money and deals from that.
