As king, Edward VIII was less than keen - regardless of his romantic situation - to fulfill the monarch's duties such as: 'doing the boxes' (i.e. the daily paperwork despatched from UK and commonwealth governments), royal visits, etc. His father was quoted as saying (I paraphrase) that David (i.e. E8) would ruin himself within a year of taking the throne and that would open up the role to his brother, Bertie (G6). Parents know their children.
I've read many books and articles on the life of Edward VIII. My overall impression of the man was that he was self-focussed. Good grief - he even lied to his successor about his financial situation after he abdicated, saying he had very little personal wealth, when just the opposite was true. George VI eventually had the real facts of David's personal finances and was crushed that this brother he had always admired was turning out to be such a cad (my terminology). David repeatedly pestered his brother for money in the ensuing years along with giving his Duchess her HRH.
One line from "The King's Speech" especially resonated with me. Bertie tells Logue that he was the only monarch whose predessesor was still living while he tried to learn the job. I hadn't thought of his situation in those terms. The public perception of David was that he could do no wrong. He was their golden boy - but only because his true behaviour was shielded from the public by the press.
I have a low opinion of David/ the Prince of Wales/King Edward VIII/the Duke of Windsor. His abdication was actually a gift to his nation because he wasn't fit for the role. Wallis was simply his ticket out Buckingham Palace.

well G4,..sorry, George IV, was an absolute dirtbag..died on his throne..william IV wasnt much of an improvement, died a king..in the era of constitutional monarchy the persona count for little..and george VI was a 'peace for our time' supporter..had nazi sympathies (early to be sure) and was against churchill..died a beloved king
