I'm wondering what you would all think of having a chat room added to the Royalty.nu site or to this board. I'm NOT planning this, just turning it over in my mind.
The reason I've never added a chat room: Well, you can probably guess. They attract spammers and other troublemakers. And I can't find one that would let me appoint moderators who can close the room when they leave.
On the other hand, chat rooms can be fun if you get a good group of regular visitors.
So, what do you think? Again, I'm probably not going to add chat for the reasons stated above, but I wish I could, and I'm curious to know if the board members have any interest in it, or any experience with some of the chat room options out there these days, like Userplane.

Sounds like a good idea. What about having chats for specific topics? At certain times. Such as, on a certain date have a chat about: What's next for Prince William? or Should the succession law be changed?
I don't know if that's possible but it might help with being able to control spammers or when to close the chat room.

I personally don't like chatrooms, I find message boards more interesting.

Thank you both for your thoughts. Marilyn, I used to host royal chats like that years ago, and it was a lot of fun. Trivia chats are fun, too.
Without hosts, chat rooms can be just a lot of stupidity and chaos, so I'm not surprised you don't like them, QueenK.
The problem is that we're all spread out over different time zones so it could be tough to schedule chats in a way that was convenient for a lot of people. Ideally I'd like to have a room that was open 24 hours a day with a constant stream of hosts to help keep order, but I don't think that's feasible for a small site like Royalty.nu right now. But I'll keep thinking about this, and all input is welcome.

I haven't been in a chat room in a loooooong time but yes if they don't have moderators they become chaotic. In terms of different time zones - the chat could be hosted twice a day? Then you'd probably have to get someone within that timezone to moderate it unless of course you're an insomniac in which case this isn't a problem. I don't know, I didn't think of the timezone thing. How many time zones are there for members? I'm in Canada - EST.

If we're talking about Royalty.nu visitors in general, that's about 70% US and Canada, but I've noticed in the past that those aren't necessarily the people most likely to participate in things.
Twice a day might work, but I haven't yet found a free or inexpensive chat room that can be easily closed down by moderators when it's not in use. That would be a very useful feature.

PS I am an insomniac, in fact, but I'm not so good at sticking to schedules, which is why I would need to find volunteer hosts! And Marilyn, guess who I would ask first??

I think it is a good idea and I would like to volunteer to host one or two. Plus you can notify people ahead of time what chat will start when.
I'm in Australia - EST

Cinderella, I'd like to chat once in a while too. I'm in Marilyn's time zone (Ontario, Canada). This sounds like it could be fun!

I haven't yet found a good chat solution, but I'll keep my eyes open since there is some interest!

Hi, Urbane -- welcome to the board! I did experiment with a chat room briefly, but have never been able to find a good solution. But these days I think Twitter is, in a way, a very good substitute for chat.
