This has "just" hit the newspaper headlines, even though the competition for the new designs was announced two years ago. The designs themselves will be announced later this year. Part of the remit still included the possibility of heraldic designs, in an imaginative way.
We will have to wait and see...

Did anyone see the new designs for the British coinage? I dont like them, parts of the Royal coat of arms makes it look like a jigsaw puzzle.

Sullyo, There's a discussion on www.worldofcoins.eu/forum about this.I don't like the new coin designs,as to me,taking the British Coat-of-Arms & hacking it into several designs is just an insult. There's nothing innovative at all about these coin designs. Yes,I am a numismatist myself. Aidan.

Its sad that Britannia on British coins since the reign of Charles II is no longer to be used on the 50p coin.

Sullyo, Britannia will still have its place - on gold & silver Britannia medal-coins,which have been issued since 1987.
I also agree that it is sad that the figure of Britannia will not be on the 50 Pence coin anymore.
Britannia has appeared on coins prior to the reign of King Charles II.She first appeared on the reverse of an ancient Roman coin.

The new British coin designs are absolutely awful. Nice to know that the Twenty Pence piece has ended up with a tiny bit of fleur-de-lys border and the backsides of two lions passant!
It would be nice to see the other entrants. They could hardly be worse.

Paul, There has also been condemnation from Virginia Ironside, the daughter of the late Christopher Ironside (the designer of the original decimal coin designs),who has said that her father must be turning in his grave if he knew what was happening with his designs.
