In the royal news there is a picture of the British royal family walking down a hall in Buckingham Palace. The Queen and Prince Charles are in front followed by their respective consorts (who are then followed by Princes William and Harry). Is that in line with standard royal protocol, the soverign and the heir walk together. Or is it on special occasians when the guest of honour being of lower rank than soverign or his/her consort takes precedence, with the soverigns consort walking with the guest of honours?

Sort of answers the question, but I'm asking about when males and female are together, are the spouses supposed to be with each other (so that The Queen walks next to Prince Philip) or are the genders lined up accordingly seperated only by people of the same gender and rank. The picture shows Harry behind his stepmother, and the Duchess of Cornwall (in the role of a princess) behind her mother inlaw. Charles infront of his father, William behind his grandfather.
