Could there have been a double for Marie Antoinette. Could she have been saved from the guillotine and possibly sent to America?

Welcome to the message board, Earthbound! It sounds like a good idea for a movie or novel, but I doubt the queen would have left her children.

Could there have been a double for Marie Antoinette. Could she have been saved from the guillotine and possibly sent to America? I believe similar speculation surrounded her son, the Dauphin, but that has been disproved by DNA testing of his heart, which was removed from his body when he died at age 10. Given the security surrounding the French Royal Family when they were captives, it is extremely unlikely that Marie Antoinette could have been replaced by a double, even assuming that one who was willing to die in her place could have been found. Even if such an unlikely event could have happened, Marie Antoinette would probably have gone to her Habsburg-Lorraine relatives in Vienna than to have gone off to the perils of the-then relatively undeveloped United States.

I've read 4-5 books on her. Very interesting person. What I have always wondered is why her brother from Austria didn't try and help to get her out before it hit the fan. Her husband wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer and the both of them chose to ignore the coming signs of trouble and stayed to 'long at the fair'. I would have chose to take a 'vacation' out of country , so, as not to alert the mob, packed up the kids and goods and got out of Dodge while I could. They messed around to long and their attempts to escape were feeble at best. I believe Madame Du Barry was beheaded too, of course she made a mistake too of returning to Paris after she was well rid of the place seems like she returned to get jewels she had left behind. Moral of the story is don't be to greedy.
