I'm not surprised she's stepping down now. I think she's ready to enjoy her golden years without a crown. I totally agree Willem and Maxima will do a great job taking up the reins.

Exciting news but hardly surprising.
But what irritates me are all the headlines from people who don't know what they are talking about. Like "Queen Beatrix abdicates". She hasn't abdicated yet! She has set in motion the wheels to accommodate her abdication which will be held on 30th April and which includes the swearing-in of her eldest son and heir as the next head of state of The Netherlands. Then, not now...
Also, the old stories [yawn, yawn] of how this reflects on the British Monarchy and would or, even, should The Queen abdicate and whether the Crown should skip a generation and go straight to The Duke of Cambridge. Blah, blah, blah...
Give me strength!
